PF Beginner Glow-Up

Why I keep coming back to Planet Fitness

Some days I walk into Planet Fitness feeling like I have zero energy… and somehow I walk out feeling like I could take on my whole week. That’s the little “gym magic” I chase. Not perfection, not being the strongest person in the room—just showing up, getting my reps in, and leaving a little more confident than I came in. 💜

I’m also big on routines that feel simple and repeatable. If I have to overthink every machine, every setup, every angle… I’ll talk myself out of it. So I started building a few “go-to” Planet Fitness days that are beginner friendly, machine heavy, and super easy to track. Think: warm up, a clear list of sets/reps, then a cool down that feels like self-care.

This post is basically my Planet Fitness blueprint for legs + glutes, with a little core sprinkled in—because I love leaving the gym feeling strong in my lower body and stable through my midsection. And yes… it’s beginner friendly. There’s no race during your workout. Take your time & be patient with yourself. 🫶🏾

Before anything: how I warm up (so my legs don’t hate me later)

If I skip a warmup, my first working set feels like punishment. So I keep it short but intentional.

Option A (quick): Stair stepper
Warm up: 3 minutes at a pace that feels steady (I usually do a moderate level and focus on breathing). If I’m feeling stiff, I’ll extend it to 10–15 minutes and gradually increase the level every 5 minutes. The goal isn’t to “burn myself out,” it’s to wake up my legs and get my hips moving.

Option B (gentle): Elliptical
Warm up: 10 minutes easy pace. This is my pick when my knees feel cranky or I just want something low impact.

Mini warmup cue that changed everything: during the last minute, I start lightly squeezing my glutes on each step/stride. Nothing dramatic—just reminding my body what today is about.

My beginner-friendly “Machines Only” leg day at Planet Fitness

This is the day I do when I want structure, I want to feel strong, and I don’t want to fight for equipment. Machines keep it simple, and they help me focus on form first (because form is the foundation).

1) Leg Press (the main character)

Leg Press – 3 sets of 12

This is where I like to start once I’m warm. I treat it like my “big lift” for the day. I’m not trying to ego lift—just controlled reps that feel challenging by the last few.

Form notes I remind myself:

• Feet flat, don’t let heels pop up.
• Control the lowering part (that’s where I feel it most).
• If I want more glute focus, I go a little wider and slightly higher on the platform.
• If I want more quad focus, I bring my stance a bit narrower (still comfortable) and keep it controlled.

If you’re new: start lighter than you think you need. The goal is to finish your set feeling like you could do 1–2 more reps with good form.

2) Leg Extension (hello quads)

Leg Extension – 3 sets of 15

This one lights up the front of my thighs fast, so I keep the weight honest. I’d rather do smooth reps than swing the stack.

Little cue: I pause for a second at the top of each rep and squeeze. That tiny pause makes the set feel so much more effective without adding weight.

3) Seated or Lying Leg Curl (DO NOT SKIP HAMMIES)

Leg Curl – 3 sets of 12–15

I used to avoid hamstring work because it felt “hard in a not-fun way.” But every time I stay consistent with curls, my legs look more balanced and my glutes feel like they work better too. It’s one of those moves that quietly upgrades everything.

Beginner tip: if you cramp easily, shorten your range a little and slow down. Cramping usually means my hamstrings are working… but I still want control, not chaos.

4) Glute Press / Glute Extension (the warm fuzzy burn)

Glute Press – 3 sets of 10

This is one of my favorite Planet Fitness machines because it helps me feel my glutes without overthinking. I focus on pushing through my heel and keeping my core braced.

What I focus on: I don’t rush the reps. If I’m flying through them, I’m probably letting other muscles take over. Slow reps = better connection.

5) Hip Abductor (outer glutes)

Hip Abductor – 3 sets of 15

This machine is a staple on my glute days. I sit tall, brace my core, and open my knees with control. If I’m feeling extra spicy, I’ll add a small pause when my legs are open and hold the squeeze.

Reminder: don’t let the weight slam back in. The control on the way back is part of the work.

6) Hip Adductor (inner thighs + stability)

Hip Adductor – 3 sets of 15

This one doesn’t get enough love, but it helps me feel more stable in my lower body overall. I keep it smooth and controlled, and I avoid leaning back and turning it into a whole-body situation.

7) Calf Extensions (the finisher that sneaks up on you)

Calf Extensions – 2 sets of 40

High reps here are my thing. Calves respond well to volume for me, and it’s a simple way to finish leg day feeling like I truly hit everything.

Tip: I do a full stretch at the bottom and a full squeeze at the top. If I cut the range, I feel it way less.

“Build the glutes” add-ons (when I have extra time)

Some days I want a little more glute emphasis—like that “dump truck” energy people joke about—but still in a beginner-friendly way. If I’m not exhausted after my machine circuit, I’ll pick one of these add-ons (not all, because recovery matters).

Option 1: Step-Ups (simple, humbling, effective)

Step Ups – 4 sets of 10 each leg

I keep the height moderate and focus on driving through the working leg. If I’m pushing off the back leg too much, I slow down and reset.

Option 2: Hip Thrusts (the holy grail)

Hip Thrust – 4 sets of 12, 10, 8, 6

I like this “go up in weight each set” style because it keeps me focused. The first set is my warmup set, then I build. If your gym has pads available, using one can make the setup way more comfortable.

Form cues I repeat in my head:
• Chin tucked slightly (I’m not throwing my head back).
• Ribs down, core tight.
• Squeeze glutes at the top like I mean it.
• I stop before my lower back starts doing the job.

Option 3: RDLs (for hamstrings + glutes)

RDLs – 3 sets of 10

This move taught me what “hinge” really means. I keep a soft bend in my knees, push my hips back, and keep the weight close to my legs. When I do it right, I feel a deep stretch in my hamstrings and my glutes have to work to stand me back up.

Option 4: Single-Leg RDLs (balance + booty connection)

Single Leg RDLs – 3 sets of 8 each leg

These are harder than they look. I start light, move slow, and use a wall or bench for balance if I need it. No shame—control is the goal.

Core add-on (when I want a full “gym girly” session)

If I’m in my self-care era and I want that full-body “I did something for me today” feeling, I’ll add a short core block after legs. Not because I’m punishing myself—because it makes me feel strong and supported.

Beginner core circuit (Planet Fitness friendly)

Stair stepper – 15 minutes
First 5 minutes: easy level
Next 5 minutes: moderate level
Last 5 minutes: slightly challenging level

Core machine or mat picks (choose 2–3):
• Crunch machine: 3 sets of 10
• Back extensions: 3 sets of 10–20 (slow and controlled)
• “Scrunches” / ab-focused machine: 5 sets of 15 if it’s light, or reduce sets if it’s intense

There’s also that core machine a lot of people side-eye because adjusting it feels confusing. If a machine looks intimidating, I treat it like a learning moment: I sit down, check the seat/lever adjustments, start with a super light setting, and do a few slow reps just to understand the movement. We’re learning & growing together. 🏋🏽‍♀️

Cool down (I don’t skip this anymore)

Cooling down is where my body says “thank you.” It also helps me leave the gym feeling calmer instead of wired.

Option A: Treadmill incline walk
10 minutes at a steady pace, moderate incline. I keep it conversational—if I can’t breathe, I went too hard.

Option B: Bike ride vibe
A steady ride for distance (I like a simple “2 miles” goal). It feels like a mini mental reset.

Option C: Arc trainer
10 minutes total, starting easier and finishing slightly harder. Smooth and low impact.

How I choose weights (without overthinking it)

I keep it beginner friendly and realistic:

• First set: a weight I know I can control for the full rep range.
• Second set: a small increase if the first set felt too easy.
• Third set: either match the second set or increase again if my form is still clean.

If my form starts getting messy, I don’t “push through” just to say I lifted heavier. I lower the weight and finish strong. That’s still progress.

Little mindset reminders I bring into every session

Mind over matter is real… but so is listening to my body. I can be disciplined without being mean to myself.

Leg day can be tough, but it’s also one of the most rewarding workouts. Progress is built one step at a time—each rep, each set. I don’t compare my beginning to anyone else’s middle. I focus on form first, and the strength follows.

And on the days I feel like I’m not doing enough, I remind myself: I’m stronger than I think. Showing up counts. Consistency counts. The “boring” days count too. 💪🏼

My exact Planet Fitness leg day recap (easy to screenshot)
